Delegates Mark Arabic Day on Campsite in Style
Day four (Tuesday, 29th December, 2015) of the 100th Islamic Vacation Course holding at the Human Capital Development Centre (HCDC), Epe was set aside as Arabic Day. It has been set aside to further promote interest in the language while furthering the mission of the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria.
Spearheaded by the office of the Naibul Amir of the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria, Lagos State Area Unit, the day provide an ample opportunity for delegates and officials alike to express themselves in Arabic throughout the day.
Virtually all conversations and programmes for the day were projected in Arabic throughout the day. In an attempt to speak in Arabic, those who couldn’t express themselves properly had to bear the challenge of intuitively interpreting the thoughts of the Arabic speakers. There were instances of code mixing and code switching within the Yoruba, English and Arabic speaking folks as they expressed themselves.
In an interaction with a cross-section of participants at the camp, they expressed their enthusiasm to learn more about the language and uphold its use beyond the day’s events. They commended the organiser’s effort at motivating and challenging them to use Arabic in conversation and writing. Those who couldn’t speak it promised to enroll for Arabic class immediately they get back home.
It would be recalled that the MSSN Lagos State Area Unit earlier in the month joined the rest of the world to mark the World Arabic Day. The Arabic Day on campsite is in furtherance of acknowledging the importance of the language spoken by at least 1.7 billion people globally.
